Elektrogas Safety Shut-off Valve FAQs

Elektrogas safety shut-off valves (SSOVs) are some of the most popular items we carry, and customers often have many questions about them. We thought it would be helpful to create a list of commonly asked questions about these valves.

Approvals

Q: Are the VMR, VML, and VMM valve models “worldwide” valves?

A: Elektrogas SSOVs are not worldwide valves today, but we are definitely on that path. There are two versions of the valves: those for the USA (FM version) and those for the Europe (CE version).

Q: Do the FM approved valves also carry the CE mark?

A: The FM version does not carry the CE mark at this time, though soon the non-POC FM valves will also be in the CE portfolio. We are also working with Elektrogas toward CSA approval.

Life Cycle

Q: What is the life cycle rating for an Elektrogas SSOV?

A: You can find the SIL data table on page 10 of our technical information document

Q: What is the expected life cycle count for the high-pressure valves?

A: The 90 PSI valve is not expected to rival the standard valve for total number of cycles prior to replacement.

Q: Does that mean I can’t use them in a pulse-fire application?

A: The high-pressure valves were designed and tested for use on the main gas train. They are not recommended for high-cycle situations.

Q: The high-pressure valves aren’t expected to have the same total number of cycles as the standard valve. Does that mean they’re not rated for 15MM cycles?

A: The high-pressure valves were designed and tested for use on the main gas train. They are not recommended for high-cycle situations.

Options and Accessories

Q: I have a digester application that uses biogas. We have a solenoid valve to allow flare-off when needed, but it often fails to open. Do you have a solution?

A: Elektrogas has an option for their valves for use with biogas. The best way forward is to send them the composition and ask for their recommendation.

Q: I have a double valve assembly from another manufacturer that has a proof of closure switch on each valve. I don’t see that as an option in the Elektrogas documentation. Does that mean Elektrogas doesn’t offer a compatible product?

A: According to NFPA86, when proof of closure is required, it is only required on one valve in series. In these cases, visual indication is required on both valves in series. The VMM double valve is available with one proof of closure switch (with visual indication included). The VI mechanical visual indicator is sold (and ships) separately. If you have an application or control scheme that requires two proof of closure signals, we can offer two single (VMR and/or VML) valves with POC.

Q: I need the ability to take measurements at the inlet and outlet sides of each valve. Do all VMR, VML, and VMM models have inlet and outlet test ports?

A: No, the smaller single valves (3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1”) do not have outlet test ports. However, all double valve sizes (including 3/4 and 1”) have ports for reading inlet and outlet pressure for both valves.
